Association of Migraine Disorders Research Grant
The purpose of this RFP is to support novel and transformative evidence-based research into migraine-related disorders. A preference will be given to basic science projects. Specifically the purpose of this RFP is: 1. To understand the pathophysiology of the neural malfunction that is called migraine disease 2. To prove or disprove a common pathophysiology among the multiple symptoms and syndromes that claim a relationship to migraine 3. To improve our understanding of the natural history of migraine disease at various stages of life, such as the differences between episodic and persistent migraine symptoms 4...

Teaching NeuroImages: Red forehead dot syndrome and migraine revisited
A 32-year-old woman with episodic headaches presented with 1.5 months of continuous left frontotemporal headache, pain, and dragging sensation in the left eye. Red forehead dot was noted along with eyelid ecchymosis (figures 1 and 2). Family history of migraine was reported in the patient's father and grandmother. Neurologic examination and brain MRI, magnetic resonance angiography, and magnetic resonance venography had normal results and workup revealed no evidence for vasculitis. Activation of the trigeminovascular system leading to release of vasoactive peptides is the likely cause of the red forehead dot and eyelid ecc...

Sara—the Search and Rescue Dog—and her Game of Fetch
Editor’s note: Jana Sweeny is the American Red Cross’s Director of International Communications. She and her team are traveling around Colombia this week, visiting communities made safer by the Red Cross.   As we walk into the Colombian Red Cross training center in Pereira, a yellow lab comes bouncing up, waving her tail enthusiastically. The ball in her mouth turns out to be a lime and she is ready to play fetch. Because I can never say no to a dog, I begin a game of “fetch the lime” with her. It turns out that Sara isn’t just a fun companion–she is a retired search and rescue dog.  The Colo...

Authorship Order in Medical Education Publications: In Search of Practical Guidance for the Community.
This study describes principles commonly applied to authorship order decisions within the medical education community and educators' opinions about the significance of authorship order. Approach: A questionnaire was developed to ascertain current practices related to authorship decisions. Sixteen items were rated in terms of frequency of actual use and the desirability of the practice using a 4-point rating scale: 1 (never), 2 (sometimes), 3 (often), and 4 (always). Additional questions addressed the perceived significance of authorship order. The last set of questions provided information about respondents' personal and c...

Meditation for Migraines: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: MBSR is safe and feasible for adults with migraines. Although the small sample size of this pilot trial did not provide power to detect statistically significant changes in migraine frequency or severity, secondary outcomes demonstrated this intervention had a beneficial effect on headache duration, disability, self-efficacy, and mindfulness. Future studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to further evaluate this intervention for adults with migraines. This study was prospectively registered (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT01545466). PMID: 25041058 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

What does the humanized monoclonal anti-CGRP antibody (TEV-48125) teach us about the perception of migraine headache? (P2.159)
Conclusions:For patients whose chronic and episodic migraines are relieved by the CGRP-mAb, the findings raise the possibility that HT neurons play a critical role (not recognized before) in the initiation and chronification of the perception of headache whereas WDR neurons contribute to the associated allodynia and central sensitization. Clinically, the findings may help explain why the therapeutic effects of CGRP-mAb are selective to headaches of intracranial origin such as migraine and why this therapeutic approach may not be effective for every migraine patient.Study Supported by:Teva PharmaceuticalsNIH Grants: R37 NS0...

Teaching NeuroImages: Red ear syndrome
A 41-year-old man presented with a 3-year history of unilateral pulsatile headaches associated with nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and 1 to 2 episodes per day of red, burning, itchy, and painful left pinna, lasting 4 hours, triggered by touch, increased temperature, and sun exposure (figure). The migraine headaches and the red pinna were temporally associated. His brother has migraines only. Examination was normal. MRI of the head and cervical spine including angiogram was unremarkable. Blood and CSF analyses were normal. Ear symptoms were worse with steroids. Beta-blockers and amitriptyline were unhelpful. Gabapentin has ...

A comparative study of psychiatric comorbidity, quality of life and disability in patients with migraine and tension type headache
Conclusion: Psychiatric comorbidity, especially depression is common in patients with migraines and tension type headache. Quality of life and functional ability are significantly impaired in these patients. The clinician should remain aware of consequences of prolonged headache, and should provide timely intervention.

Comparison of the Effect of Propranolol Combination with Cinnarizine and Propranolol in the Prevention of Acute Migraine Attacks
This study aimed to compare the effect of cinnarizine combination with propranolol and propranolol with placebo in preventing acute migraine attacks. This study was a semi-experimental study performed on 120 adult patients with migraine referred to Department of Neurology in Rezgary Teaching Hospital in Erbil.. Participants were randomly allocated to two groups control (propranolol) and intervention (propranolol with cinnarizine). The frequency, duration and severity of headache attacks were recorded and followed within two months. Data were analyzed with SPSS ver23 software and T-paired, independent T-tests and ANOVA. The...

The Migraine Aura
This article discusses the basic mechanisms of migraine aura and its clinical significance based upon evidence from human studies and animal models. RECENT FINDINGS Prospective clinical studies have reinforced the understanding that migraine aura is highly variable from one individual to the next as well as from attack to attack in an individual. While migraine with aura clearly has a higher heritability than migraine without aura, population studies have not identified specific genes that underlie this heritability for typical migraine with aura. Imaging studies reveal hypoperfusion associated with migraine aura, altho...

Reduced Visual Quality of Life Associated with Migraine is Most Closely Correlated with Symptoms of Dry Eye.
CONCLUSIONS: Dry eye seems to be the most important symptom that reduces visual quality of life and worsens headache impact. This symptom may be a form of allodynia, a well-known feature of chronic migraine. Photophobia appears to have modest effects on headache impact. In the future, we hope to determine whether treatment of dry eye symptoms can improve visual quality of life and reduce headache impact. PMID: 31557326 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
